World’s Largest Cruise Ship Capacity

Guests, maximum guests and crew — three numbers, one floating town.

The world’s largest cruise ship capacity is usually quoted as one number, but it is really three: guests at double occupancy, guests at maximum occupancy, and crew. Understanding the difference tells you more about how busy a sailing will feel than the tonnage ever will.

Three Numbers Behind Every Capacity Figure

Double occupancy

Two guests in every cabin. For Icon-class ships, 5,610. Lines use this as the standard because most cabins sell to couples.

Maximum occupancy

Every third and fourth berth filled as well — about 7,600 on an Icon-class ship. School holidays bring sailings closest to it.

Crew

About 2,350 on the Icon class, from officers and engineers to chefs, cabin stewards and entertainers.

Royal Caribbean’s figures for the class also include 2,805 staterooms across 20 decks. Add maximum guests to crew and you get close to 10,000 people — the population of a small town.

How Mega-Ships Handle the Crowds

  • Neighborhoods. The Icon class divides the ship into eight distinct zones, so families, pool-goers and quiet readers are not all in one place.
  • Staggered times. Assigned arrival windows at the terminal, reservations for shows and set dining times spread the peaks.
  • Many venues. With dozens of places to eat and drink, no single restaurant takes the full load.
  • Apps. Lines’ apps let you book, check in and see what is open, cutting time spent in line.

Making a Full Sailing Feel Smaller

Choose a cabin away from the busiest public areas if you sleep lightly, and close to the elevators you will use most if you have limited mobility — Cruise Ship Deck Plans explains how. Visit the pools early or late, see the headline shows on the night with the lightest bookings, and leave the ship a little after the first rush in port. Sailings outside school holidays carry fewer third and fourth guests, so they rarely approach maximum capacity.

Port days matter too. A ship carrying several thousand guests usually needs a large pier or a private island; smaller harbors use tenders, which take time. Caribbean Cruise Ports describes the Caribbean ports these ships visit, so you can plan your time ashore.

Guests per Crew Member

One quick way to judge service on a big ship is to divide guests by crew. Using the Icon-class figures above, there are roughly two and a half guests for every crew member at double occupancy, rising to more than three when every berth is filled. Smaller luxury ships have far fewer guests per crew member, which is part of what their higher fares pay for. On a mega-ship, the ratio is one reason to book specialty restaurants and shows ahead of time, and to use the line’s app rather than waiting in line at a desk.

Capacity Questions

What is the world’s largest cruise ship capacity?

Icon-class ships are designed for 5,610 guests at double occupancy and about 7,600 at maximum, with a crew of about 2,350 — close to 10,000 people when every berth is filled.

Why are there two passenger numbers?

Double occupancy counts two guests per cabin, the industry’s standard measure. Maximum capacity adds every pull-down and sofa bed, which fill mainly during school holidays.

Does a full ship feel crowded?

It depends on the design and the moment. Mega-ships spread people across separate zones, but embarkation, popular shows and the main pools can still be busy. Timing your day helps.
